Embark on an unforgettable 2-day desert adventure from Marrakech to Zagora, crossing the majestic High Atlas Mountains and the iconic Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou before reaching the golden dunes of the Sahara Desert. Experience a magical camel trek, a night under the stars in a desert camp, and breathtaking sunset and sunrise views — a perfect introduction to Morocco’s desert landscapes for travelers short on time.
Set off in the morning for an unforgettable drive across the High Atlas Mountains, crossing the legendary Tizi n'Tichka pass, which peaks at over 2,260 meters. Along the way, admire picturesque Berber villages perched on the mountainsides, offering some of the most spectacular scenery in Morocco.
We'll make a stop to explore the Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most iconic film locations in the world, hundreds of movies have been shot here, including The Mummy, Gladiator, Seven Years in Tibet, Babel, and Alexander.
After lunch, continue south through dramatic lunar-like landscapes and pre-Saharan routes until reaching Zagora. Once a key stop on the ancient trans-Saharan caravan route linking Morocco to Timbuktu, Zagora is a warm, palm-fringed oasis town on the edge of the desert, framed by the striking Zagora Mountain. It's the gateway to the Draa Valley, Morocco's longest river valley, lined with palm groves, mudbrick kasbahs, and traditional Berber villages.
From here, a short drive brings you to the first golden sand dunes, offering your first true taste of the Sahara Desert. Watching the sunset, and later, sunrise, over the dunes is a truly unforgettable experience. As evening falls, set off on an authentic camel trek into the desert, immersing yourself in the vast solitude, silence, and immensity of the Sahara. Enjoy dinner and an overnight stay in a desert camp near Zagora.
After breakfast, begin the journey back to Marrakech. En route, stop in Ouarzazate, known as the "Hollywood of Morocco," to visit the historic Kasbah of Taourirt and the renowned Atlas Film Studios. From there, continue back to Marrakech via the scenic Tizi n'Tichka pass.
